Band Shoulder Press

Standing on a resistance band, press the ends from shoulder height to overhead. It trains the front and side delts and the triceps, and the band is hardest at lockout. Choose it as an overhead press at home when you have bands but no weights.

Band Shoulder Press exercise demonstration

How to do it

  1. Stand on the middle of the band with the arches of both feet, feet hip-width.
  2. Bring one end of the band to each shoulder, up the outside of the arms, palms facing forward and elbows just in front of the body.
  3. Brace the core and pull the ribs down so the lower back stays neutral.
  4. Press both hands straight up until the elbows lock out above the shoulders.
  5. Hold the lockout for one count with the arms beside the ears.
  6. Lower under control back to shoulder height.

Watch for

  • Ribs flaring to turn the press into a backbend.
  • Wrists bending back as the band pulls hardest.
  • The band slipping out from under the feet.

Breathing

Inhale and brace at the shoulders, exhale as you press up.

Tip

Press one arm at a time to feel the core work against the sideways pull, and log the reps of one arm.
