Push Press exercise demonstration

How to do it

  1. Set the bar in the front rack with a grip just outside the shoulders.
  2. Brace the core and keep the elbows slightly in front of the bar.
  3. Dip a few inches by bending the knees with the torso vertical.
  4. Drive through the legs and press the bar overhead in one motion.
  5. Lock out the elbows with the bar over the middle of the head.
  6. Lower the bar under control back to the shoulders.

Watch for

  • Leaning forward during the dip.
  • Pausing between the dip and the drive.
  • Finishing with the bar in front of the head instead of over it.

Breathing

Inhale and brace before the dip, exhale after lockout.

Tip

Once the timing feels smooth, you can handle clearly more weight than in the strict press.
